ATTENDANCE
Was a durational improvisitory work performed in response to Henna Nerg's exhibition "Soft Border" at UFT Verftet, while in residency at Bergen Dansesenter in Bergen, Norway. The work was practiced each day of the gallery's open hours for one week and performed for one hour at the finnisage of the exhibition.
Emanating from the questions "How might I attend?" and then "How might I attend again, differently?" this work utilized watching, soft strip, and embodiment through mirroring as technologies to engage with Henna's sculpture works.
That Henna had watched the blue net floating in the sea for days before fishing it out.
That she carried in dripping wet back to their studio where she layed it out to dry, and that all the creatures stuck in it, the crabs, and snails, and seaweed, eventually died, and that they only managed to save maybe one, maybe just one little snail.
That the pattern for the sculptures is an exact replica of a cast she had made of some animal piss in the snow last winter, which was very difficult to do without melting the snow or altering the truth of the piss formed indentation.
That they had cried while working with the trash picked leather, because making the holes to sew it felt so violent.
That Henna is vegan, and tender, and punk, and kind.
At first I just worked in visual response, but as the week went on and I chatted more with Henna (who was also there every day) the response became more of an elegy or call back to what I was learning about the construction of the sculptures.
I posted this on the gallery door outside :
